MIT Press published an open access book of essays Wikipedia 20: Stories of an Unfinished Revolution, edited by Joseph Reagle and Jackie Koerner with contributions from prominent Wikipedians, Wikimedians, researchers, journalists, librarians and other experts reflecting on particular histories and themes. On 13 January 2021, the English Wikipedia reached one billion edits, where the billionth edit was made by Steven Pruitt. In October 2014, the Wikipedia Monument was unveiled to the public in Poland to honor all the contributors of Wikipedia.Īccording to the TechCrunch website, on 23 January 2020, Wikipedia had surpassed more than 6 million articles on the English Wikipedia. The number of articles and contributors appeared to be growing less quickly around spring 2007. The English Wikipedia reached 3 million articles in August 2009. The English Wikipedia passed the 2 million-article mark on September 9, 2007, making it the largest encyclopedia ever assembled, even larger than the Yongle Encyclopedia (1407), which had held the record for exactly 600 years. After this, its text was incorporated into Wikipedia. Nupedia and Wikipedia both existed until Nupedia's servers were stopped in 2003. ![]() By late 2002 it had 26 languages, 46 by the end of 2003, and 161 by the end of 2004. It grew to about 20,000 articles, and 18 languages by the end of 2001. Wikipedia gained early contributors from Nupedia, Slashdot, and from people who looked it up. Otherwise, there weren't very many rules initially, and Wikipedia operated independently of Nupedia. Wikipedia's policy of "neutral point-of-view" was enforced in its initial months, and was similar to Nupedia's earlier "nonbiased" policy. It was launched as an English-language edition at and announced by Sanger on the Nupedia mailing list. Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001. On January 10, 2001, Larry Sanger proposed on the Nupedia mailing list to create a wiki as a "feeder" project for Nupedia. Sanger created the strategy of using a wiki to reach Wales' goal. Wales is credited with defining the goals of the project. Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales are the ones who started Wikipedia. Nupedia was first licensed under the Nupedia Open Content License which was changed to the GNU Free Documentation License before Wikipedia was founded and made their first article when Richard Stallman requested them. The important people of the company were Jimmy Wales, the person in charge of Bomis, and Larry Sanger, the editor-in-chief of Nupedia. Nupedia's articles were written and owned by Bomis, Inc which was a web portal company. Nupedia was a free English-language online encyclopedia project. Wikipedia began as a related project for Nupedia. Wikipedia originally developed from another online encyclopedia project, Nupedia. The regular English Wikipedia is the largest Wikipedia edition. Wikipedia has a standard page layout for all pages in the encyclopedia.Īs of September 2011, Wikipedia had about 18 million pages in about 300 languages and more than 3.50 billion words across all Wikipedias. I’m excited to what this project will bring. If you are an artist/songwriter/musician that wants to get involved with a project like this then don’t hesitate to go to my website and click contact. I am currently working with a number of people on this particular project at the moment. After each track is finished, I will then sit and weave all of the pieces together, borrowing and replicating sounds from other pieces, bringing all the artists ideas into one mashup of sound, leaving the understanding of each piece intact but binding philosophies until I have a complete work. I will work with each artist/musician individually, utilising their skill set and more importantly exploring their own vision of how to interpret the concept of 'time’. There are many possibilities sonically and philosophically to explore within this broad concept.Įach track will be a collaboration with another artist, just like the track with Ran. The project will focus on the concept of time. The success of the collaboration leads me to my next project. I worked in the studio with my drummer to come up with a track released on Mad Hop Vol.7 called ‘A Long Road To Rest On’. It was a long time since I had written anything without the focus of it being for a live project. Late last year I wrote a track with the sound and visual artist Ran Slavin. That will make the live material a lot more complete and will add many more textures to explore. I think I’d like to add one more musician. The result is something I had been wanting since I started the Mechanical Elephant project. The drummer’s feed goes directly through into my computer and is then modified by whatever I am using at the time. Although I do still use the iPad on occasion, I mainly work with a drummer, a USB sampling pad and a bunch of microphones. ![]() In my previous blog post I included a picture of me singing live with an iPad. ![]() Since my last post everything has gotten more real. I like to think of it as poetic, but online it looks like I rarely do anything at all. When I write music for a live set, I use the material once and then throw it away. Most of the material I have written in the past year I have written for a live environment. Most of you that know me personally know that I write music quite sporadically. Make sure that the beginning and end of each song work well by themselves. It has been a year since my last blog post. ![]() Just be mindful of how each song sounds in isolation. So my advice is this: Do use seamless transitions, as they offer a very smooth listening experience for those who do listen to entire albums at a time. That said, occasionally I'll listen to music on internet radio stations, where there is no coherent transition from one song to the next. ![]() This works out great, for me at least, and I get to hear songs in context of an album as a whole. I'll normally listen to the first half of an album on the way to work, and the second half on the way home. I rarely listen to music at home, where I'd rather work on producing it. Like many people, the majority of my time spent listening to music is in the car, on the way to and from work. I very much enjoy hearing an album the way the artist intended, especially when there is a theme or narrative present in the album. Just to offer another perspective, I typically only listen to complete albums, rather than individual songs. ![]() ![]() PDFormXObject formXObject = (PDFormXObject) xobject PDXObject xobject = resources.getXObject(name) Private static void processResources(PDResources resources) throws IOExceptionįor (COSName name : resources.getXObjectNames()) ![]() WriteTokensToStream(newContents, newTokens) PDStream newContents = new PDStream(document) List newTokens = createTokensWithoutText(page) "Error: Encrypted documents are not supported for this example.") Appendix 3: Assorted Technical Information.Appendix 2: Considerations on Embedded Files.Recipes: Common Issues and their Solutions. ![]() ![]() When the tubes and pathways are working properly, there is a clear passageway between the two mouths. Both mouths have a neck (cervix) and lips (labia), which are connected by a subsystem of tubes and containers. The Hippocratic texts seem to imagine a woman’s anatomy as a central tube with mouths at either end. Women’s health, then, is more tenuous than men’s, in that it depends on their bodies’ powers either to use up or expel excess fluids. Because the heat and dryness of men’s bodies absorbs excess liquid, they do not need to menstruate and semen is the only excess fluid they emit. Because of their cold sponginess, women’s bodies absorb more fluids, must shed blood regularly, and so are naturally imbalanced. The need for women to bleed regularly was taken to prove female flesh to be moist, porous, spongy, and cold, in contradistinction to men’s dry, firm, hard, and warm flesh. Two features of the female body convinced the Hippocratic authors of a crucial difference between female and male bodies: Women have menses and a womb (or uterus). In the words of one Hippocratic author, a human being “enjoys the greatest health, when these are in balance to each other in terms of mixture, power, and quantity.” If we endorse the idea that human flesh is fundamentally a collection of fluids in various forms of “concoction,” then it is reasonable to see human health as depending on their proper balance. Before the advent of dissection, an account of the body based on fluids must have seemed eminently plausible: A human body is full of blood, guts, bile, and stuff to be vomited and such fluids do seem fungible in that, say, food becomes other sorts of fluids which have a range of qualities. The Hippocratic authors agree that the bones or infrastructure of a human body are covered with flesh, which is constituted of different kinds of fluids, which themselves are more or less hot or cold and moist or dry. These multi-authored medical writings, roughly a quarter of which concern the health and diseases of women, contain the first clear differentiation of female and male bodies and were foundational in the Western medical tradition. The earliest period for which we have detailed written accounts of women’s bodies is classical Greece of the fifth and fourth centuries BCE, the period when various texts, long associated with Hippocrates, were written. What about women’s bodies might make them so degraded? That is, the Timaeus suggests that women are a degraded state of humanity, a kind of punishment that follows from unwise behavior. There, the narrator spins a tale according to which the gods first created men and then punished those “who lived lives of cowardice or injustice” by turning them into women in their next lives. Plato suggests something like this in the Timaeus, his mythic account of how the world might have been created. ![]() ![]() How might someone who endorses Plato’s views about soul, body, and the good explain the paucity of female interlocutors in the dialogues? Might there be something about a woman’s body that makes it harder for her soul to “purge” itself of bodily associations so as “to concentrate itself by itself”? A Platonist could consistently believe both that all souls are equal in capacities and that female bodies are more difficult for the genderless soul to escape. If patriarchy is the system by means of which men control women and, in the recent words of Kate Manne, sexism is “the branch of patriarchal ideology that justifies and rationalizes a patriarchal social order,” then misogyny is “the system that polices and enforces” patriarchy’s “governing norms and expectations.” The audacity of Chambliss’s pronouncements can be traced back through hundreds of generations of powerful men to the earliest writings on women’s bodies. One of the sponsors of the bill, Senator Clyde Chambliss, defended the “purity” of the law, which denies abortion to survivors of rape or incest, explaining, “When God creates the miracle of life inside a woman’s womb, it is not our place as human beings to extinguish that life.” Whatever else we might say about Chambliss’s argument, it has an ancient pedigree and impeccable logic: It is the duty of those men able to discern the divine goodness in the world to protect women’s procreative powers. Among the 25 Alabama state senators who voted on May 14 to pass the country’s most repressive restriction on women’s health care, every single one was a man, many of them joyous in protecting the sanctity of motherhood and saving women from themselves. ![]() |
